City of Saginaw, Michigan

JUNE 29, 2021 SAGINAW, MI – The City of Saginaw will host the Utility PaymentAssistance Collaborative beginning Wednesday, June 30 through Friday, July 2 10 am to 2pm each day at City Hall, 1315 S. Washington Avenue.

The 3-day event will allow citizens who are struggling to pay their past due water
bills and are in danger of shutoff to learn more about the financial assistance that is
available. Representatives from various community organizations will be available each
day of the event to assist citizens with the application process.

The City resumed water shutoffs on June 15 for any account shown as
delinquent with no recent payment activity or approved payment arrangement. Prior to
resuming shutoffs for non-payment, Fiscal Services staff attempted to contact all
Water/Sewer Customers who are behind on their payments advising them to make
payment arrangements and/or seek assistance. The city is encouraging utility
customers that are struggling to pay their bills to seek financial assistance or contact
Water Billing customer service at 989-759-1450 to make payment arrangements.

The City is temporarily pausing water shut offs until July 15 so that citizens can apply for assistance and partner organizations can process the applications. In lieu of shutoffs, City of Saginaw Maintenance and Service personnel will be distributing tags to homes that are in danger of shutoff along with information on how these residents can apply for assistance.

Councilwoman Annie Boensch has worked to coordinate the 3-day event at City Hall in an effort to assist citizens and avoid water shutoffs. “We understand there are a number of citizens who are in danger of water shutoff, but financial assistance is available. Several community organizations have funds available for households who qualify. The events at City Hall will streamline the process and be an easy way for citizens to work with the local representatives from community organizations, apply for the assistance, and avoid water shutoff.”

Citizens attending one of the collaborative events scheduled from Wednesday, June 30 through Friday, July 2 are asked to bring the following documentation:

  • Most Recent City of Saginaw Water Bill Showing Balance Due
  • Proof of Income
  • Photo Identification
Representatives from the City of Saginaw will also be available to discuss payment options with citizens. STARS is still providing free service for any citizen in need of transportation to the event.

“This has been a challenging time for everyone as we resume water shutoffs for non-payment,” said Lori Brown, Finance Director. “Financial assistance is available for citizens. The collaborative events this week will help citizens with the
application process and direct them toward the available assistance. We want to do all
we can to work with our customers through this process.”
