City of Saginaw, Michigan

March 22, 2021 SAGINAW, MI –The Michigan Municipal League has given Saginaw Mayor Brenda F. Moore the Jim Sinclair Exceptional Service Award for her commitment to her community.

“Brenda’s passion for her community and the people she serves shines through in
everything she does,” said Westland Mayor and Michigan Municipal League Board President William Wild. “From working diligently to ensure an active census count to her constant engagement in various league committees, she is the ideal embodiment of what it means to be a community leader.”

After being elected to City Council in 2013, Mayor Moore quickly became involved with
the Michigan Municipal League by attending conferences and training to understand her role as a newly elected official. Brenda completed all four levels of the Michigan Municipal League training: Education, Leadership, Governance, and Ambassador. Mayor Moore was elected to the Board of Trustees for the Michigan Municipal League where she served as Vice President in 2019-2020 and in September 2020 she became the first African-American woman to serve as President of the Michigan Municipal League Board of Trustees. She has also served as 2nd Vice President for the Michigan Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials, President of the Elected Officials Academy, and the Municipal Finance Committee. Brenda served as Saginaw’s Mayor Pro Tem from 2018 to the fall of 2020. She was elected Mayor of the City of Saginaw in November 2020.

According to the Michigan Municipal League's website, the Jim Sinclair Exceptional Service Award is a peer-nominated award created in memory of Rogers City Council Member Jim Sinclair. Its goal is to celebrate a person who tirelessly promotes local government and continued training for elected officials.

“It’s an honor to be recognized by the MML with the Jim Sinclair Award,” commented Mayor Moore. “It is very rewarding to be as part of the Michigan Municipal League and to represent the City of Saginaw at the statewide level. My service with the MML allows Saginaw to have first-hand knowledge of the issues and opportunities at the State level. This training takes a tremendous amount of time and effort, but it is worth it to better serve the citizens of Saginaw.”

City Manager Tim Morales commented on the significance of this recognition, “Mayor Moore has been an active participant in the MML training programs since being elected to City Council in 2013. This award highlights an individual who possesses the personal dedication and commitment to the MML and its mission. I cannot think of a more deserving person than Mayor Moore.”
