How do I apply?
Interested applicants may visit the City of Saginaw Boards & Commissions web portal to view vacancies available and descriptions of each of the boards and commissions. Applicants can apply for any vacancy by clicking “Join this Board” and “Apply” on the following page. The “Apply Now” button will then be available near the top of the page. By clicking, applicants will be prompted to create a username and password to complete and submit the application.
Prospective applicants may also print and complete an Application for Boards & Commissions and return it to the City Clerk’s Office at 1315 S. Washington Avenue, Room 102, Saginaw, MI 48601.
How will I know if I’m appointed?
Applications are vetted to determine the eligibility of the applicant. If the applicant is deemed eligible, the appointment will be placed on a City Council agenda for approval. After approval, the applicant will be sent a welcome email from the City Clerk’s Office with oath information and the name and contact information of the staff person for the applicable board or commission. If the applicant is deemed ineligible, a letter or email will be sent outlining the reason(s) for the determination. If the ineligibility is due to a city default, the letter will state the default and how the applicant can rectify it.

Purpose:
The Zoning Board of Appeals reviews requests for variances from the strict application of zoning provisions, special exceptions, interpretations of zoning district boundaries and zoning text, and reviews appeals of zoning decisions in an adjudicatory fashion. Types of variances considered include:
- Use Variance:A use variance permits the use of land that is otherwise not permitted in the zone in which the property is located.
- Non- Use Variance:A non-use variance allows for modification of the regular provisions of the zoning code for height, size, setback, lot coverage, and other physical requirements of the zoning code.
- Set Back Variance:Allows for when a proposed structure is too close to a lot line.
- Lot Coverage Variance:Allows for when too much of lot may be covered by buildings.

Commissioners are appointed by the Mayor with City Council approval for a three (3) year term.

Purpose:
The Downtown Development Authority (DDA) strives to halt property value deterioration and increase property valuation where possible in the City’s business district and to eliminate the causes of deterioration. The purpose of the DDA is to bolster economic activity and development within the DDA district. This is done through business retention programs, job creation activities and overall economic development assistance.
