The Department of Public Services is responsible for a wide range of maintenance services throughout the City.   These services include year round street maintenance including snow plowing and salting, traffic signals and signs, trees, parks and grounds, administration, maintenance of City Hall and the Police Department, fleet maintenance, street lights, leaf removal, wash and repair bridges and bridge walk ways, and maintenance of City parking lots.

Additionally, the Public Services Department maintains the Japanese Cultural Center and Teahouse, the Andersen Enrichment Center, Compost Site, Boat Launch and City Cemeteries, process special events and block party applications for approval, install street banners and seasonal decorations, and is the City’s enforcement arm for the “Weed Abatement” ordinances. 

The Public Services Department responds to hazardous conditions resulting from weather, accidents, and other unforeseen situations.  The Saginaw Police Department as necessary notifies management personnel.  An answering machine is also available for placing non-emergency service requests after normal work hours by calling (989) 759-1662.

The Public Services Department is located at 1435 S. Washington, the former Public Works building.  The Department Director, Superintendent of Right of Way, City Engineer, Drafting Supervisor, Garage Foreman, Labor Foreman I & II, Building Maintenance Supervisor, Crew Leaders, Equipment Operators, Fleet Mechanics, and general labor are located in this facility.  GIS and Information Services also have offices at this location.

The Departmental Staff Professional and Administrative Professionals are responsible for receiving calls made to the Public Services Department relative to service requests and to provide information.  Service requests are recorded and then routed to the appropriate Supervisor for action.

The Department possesses a variety of equipment to accomplish maintenance tasks:  Dump trucks, backhoes, front-end loaders, snow removal equipment, chipper trucks, wood chippers for tree maintenance, grass mowing equipment, street sweepers for clearing dirt and small debris along curbs and the portable power washer for cleaning sidewalks in the business districts, combination vacuum, numerous pieces of small equipment such as pumps, generators, snow blowers, compressors, string trimmers, and blowers are also available.  The Department is also able to produce custom signs for a variety of uses in the City.

The Public Service facility also houses the fleet maintenance garage.  This is a full service facility with lifts, hoists, and sufficient parts inventory capable of keeping City equipment operational.
