Traffic Engineering
Traffic Engineering is responsible for a safe and efficient transportation system using the sound practice of fundamental traffic engineering principles and procedures. Approximately 100,000 vehicles each day pass through the city's 300 miles of intersecting streets. People depend upon proper signs, pavement markings, barricading, traffic signals and other devices to control traffic flow and relieve congestion. Traffic Engineering personnel maintain these devices and monitor the network for any changes that may disrupt traffic flow. Currently, all traffic lights are on a yearly service schedule including cleaning, relamping, and upgrades.
Street lighting enhances the city environment and provides a tool in crime prevention. Traffic Engineering staff monitors and maintains the 7,400 bulb system on an as-needed basis. Crews routinely service, clean and relamp fixtures. The expected life of a high pressure sodium light bulb is about 7 years.
Detours are designed and implemented per construction project. If you have any questions or concerns, you can contact Paula Diem. Major Street Pavement markings are refreshed every other year on an East side schedule of even years and a West Side schedule of odd years.
The Radio Operations section is responsible for administering the City's public service two-way radio communications system. Proper installation and maintenance of approximately 570 fixed and mobile radio devices ensure a reliable communication system to users.
