GIS – Geographic Information Systems Division

Mission Statement

It is our vision to use advanced Geographic based technology to help streamline daily tasks, increase productivity, and have the ability to provide a higher quality of service to the public through the use of a Geographic Information System.

What is GIS?

“GIS is a technology that is used to view and analyze data from a geographic perspective. The technology is a piece of an organization's overall information system framework.  GIS links location to information (such as people to addresses, buildings to parcels, or streets within a network) and layers that information to give you a better understanding of how it all interrelates. You choose what layers to combine based on your purpose.” - ESRI

City of Saginaw GIS Program

The City’s GIS program dates back to the mid 1990’s, when this new and powerful technology was introduced while inventorying and replacing the City’s catch basins and manholes.  GPS or Global Positioning System was used to capture and collect information on each of these features and integrated into a right-of-way digital map.

In 2001 the City of Saginaw created its GIS division with the addition of a GIS Administrator and GIS Analyst and in 2003 a Web Technology Developer was added to integrate the City’s geographic data and the Internet.

Currently the GIS Division is responsible for maintaining over 100 geographic data layers and the development of the City website and 6 interactive mapping sites.
