Community Involvement & Programs
Freddie
Freddie, the 10-foot tall inflatable firefighter, became the newest employee of the Saginaw Fire Department
in October 2008 and provides a new dimension to fire safety education presentations. Fire professionals
know the secret to success in presenting fire safety education programs to children is the ability to get the
message across in such a way that the information will be remembered. Retention of ‘what to do’
is what makes a fire and life safety presentation worthwhile and Freddie is able to be a part of helping everyone
remember what they have seen and heard. As a part of what is becoming an almost theatrical presentation, the
oversized firefighter gets and holds everyone’s attention by nodding yes and no answers to questions presented
by fire prevention staff, gyrating in what appears to be, due to his size, exaggerated movements, and dancing to his own
theme song. Combine all these movements and Freddie is an attention getter that helps everyone remember fire and life
safety messages.
